Lost your subsidy?

What to do if you lost your Obamacare subsidy

Your renewal came in and the tax credit is gone, or way smaller. Do not just auto-renew. Here is a step-by-step plan for 2027.

Short answer

First, figure out why the subsidy dropped and confirm your 2027 income estimate is right. Next, ask a tax professional whether pre-tax contributions could lower your income below the limit. Then compare full-price ACA plans against private options before Open Enrollment ends on January 15, 2027.

Why it happened

The enhanced premium tax credits that helped people from 2021 through 2025 have expired. KFF notes that people with incomes above 400% of the federal poverty level "will be particularly hard hit" in 2027 because they no longer qualify for premium tax credits and must pay the full cost (KFF). For 2027, credits stop above $63,840 for an individual or $132,000 for a family of four (KFF).

Other common causes:

Step 1: Verify your income estimate

Eligibility is based on modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) (KFF). If the Marketplace used last year's tax data and your 2027 income will be lower, update your application. Be accurate, not hopeful: beginning with the 2026 tax year, the caps on repaying excess advance credits were eliminated, so an estimate that is too low can lead to a large tax bill (KFF).

Step 2: See if you can get back under the line

Because the credit drops to zero above 400% of the poverty level, a small change in MAGI can matter a lot. KFF notes some enrollees may lower MAGI through contributions to HSAs (with an HSA-eligible plan) or traditional IRAs (KFF). This is a tax question, so talk to your tax professional.

Step 3: Compare full-price ACA plans

When you pay the whole premium, plan choice matters more. Compare the total yearly cost: twelve months of premium, the deductible, the out-of-pocket maximum, and whether your doctors and prescriptions are covered. ACA-compliant plans are also sold directly by insurers outside the Marketplace, with the same protections but no credit (KFF).

Step 4: Compare private options

For healthy people, private underwritten plans may cost less than a full-price ACA plan. They can decline applicants or exclude conditions and may not include all ACA benefits, so read the details. See private insurance vs. the Marketplace for the trade-offs.

Step 5: Check the rest of the household

Kids may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. A spouse may have employer coverage. And if employer family coverage costs more than 10.22% of household income in 2027, family members may qualify for Marketplace credits (KFF).

Step 6: Beat the deadline

Enroll by December 15 for January 1 coverage, or by January 15 for February 1. After that, you generally need a Special Enrollment Period (HealthCare.gov). If you do nothing, you may be renewed into a plan that now costs much more.

Check state help

Some states that run their own exchanges use state money to replace part of the lost federal help, including New Mexico, California, and New Jersey, with new programs in Rhode Island and Virginia, according to KFF (KFF). Support varies by state and income.

FAQ

Why did I lose my Obamacare subsidy?

Most often because projected household income is above 400% of the poverty level ($63,840 single, $132,000 family of four for 2027) after the enhanced credits expired (KFF). Household, employer coverage, and eligibility rule changes can also play a role.

Can I lower my income to qualify for a subsidy?

Some people can lower MAGI through HSA or traditional IRA contributions, according to KFF (KFF). Ask a tax professional before relying on it.

Will I have to pay back my subsidy?

If your actual income is higher than estimated, you may have to repay excess advance credits. The repayment caps were eliminated starting with the 2026 tax year (KFF).

When is the deadline to enroll for 2027?

On HealthCare.gov, enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1, or by January 15 for coverage starting February 1. After that you generally need a Special Enrollment Period from a life event such as moving, marriage, a new baby, or losing coverage (HealthCare.gov).
